So far so good for this user, I'm really excited about this update! Thought: why not be able to reconcile transactions from phone as well? Would be especially useful with the new syncing capabilities.

Angie, call me dumb, but I just don't understand how the app can find the *.md file if it is not somewhere in the Dropbox folder. I've been syncing dozens of apps through Dropbox for years (including Moneydance) and, in some cases, have created symlinks back to ~/Library (for those apps that insist on finding data there, such as Bento and MarsEdit), but invariably there has to be a file present on Dropbox for sync to work.
Surely the whole point is that the file is actually stored on Dropbox? How can the file be found "no matter where it is"? This sounds like magic; nonetheless I stand to be enlightened.

I seem to be in the unlucky minority which cannot get the sync to work. I've followed the instructions scrupulously. My Moneydance file has always been in a Dropbox folder and I set it up with the Configuration option in the Network Sync extension.

First off I got nowhere. The iPhone app took me not directly to Dropbox's server but to the Dropbox app on my phone. Every time I got a report that the sync file could not be found.

I then deleted the Dropbox app and reinstalled Moneydance. This time I was asked for the Dropbox credentials. This time I got to the "Loading Account/Locating Moneydance Sync Files" screen with the spinning ball. I let it spin but after about 30 minutes decided to start again from scratch because I didn't seem to be getting anywhere.

On the second attempt the same thing happened and the ball has now been spinning for 45 minutes. I have 53GB of data on Dropbox so I reasoned that it could take more time than usual, but this is now getting ridiculous.

Any ideas anyone?

First, I want to say thank you for the Dropbox support. In particular, thank you for not requiring my actual data file to be stored in my Dropbox. The way it is done is perfect, and it will greatly simply things for me.

That being said, I'm disappointed that I can't specify a default account to be used when I press the '+' button. If you look at my screenshot[1], you'll see that my checking account is not accessible without swiping first. My checking account is actually the next account after the last account shown. Thus, it slows me down when trying to enter items on-the-go. Being able to specify which account the '+' button defaults to (I don't know how it is determining the account to use right now) would solve my problem. Another solution would be to allow me to hide accounts on the phone app (I really don't care about my CDs on my phone).

Yes, that's how I store my data file- then I can get to it no matter what computer I'm on and so can my fiancee! Since our data files are cross-platform compatible, you can access it from your PC, Mac, and Linux machines. Just don't open your file on more than one computer at once- it could cause data corruption.

Hmm, that's interesting.... Well, putting that file into my DB folder seemed to help things run more smoothly for me, so I figured I might as well share that info. Also, using this method, families could probably each enter transactions on their separate computers, and it would show up on everyone else's, which can be REALLY convenient for some people. I'm going to experiment with that today!

Technically you don't need to store your MD file in dropbox for the sync to work (we see a lot of people have it work just fine no matter where the file is), but every once in a while it seems to fix a sync issue. Correlation/causation, we're trying to figure that out.

And yes Dropbox syncing ROCKS! I use Moneydance for my finances every day, and having instant sync is just amazing.

The "future vs current" balances iPhone behavior is definitely something we're talking about internally. I think it will likely be an adjustment we make in the future, but there's no current timeline.

I agree a search feature would be awesome, I've make sure there's a feature request ticket for it!

I think I've got it sorted now - the tutorial didn't mention where to save the files. Last night it said "searching for money dance files" and got nowhere, but this morning it seems to work.

One annoying thing that is still there is the bank account balances still show as the future balances, rather than todays. I like to put in future transactions so I can forecast balance sin future which makes my accounts look wrong.

Also, another request - a search facility would be good, so you can search for transactions on the move.

Slowly it's getting there though, so keep up the good work!

Just thought I'd chime in and try to help. I got everything set up and working today, but it took a little tweaking, and the instructions seemed to miss a couple of important steps, mainly, that you need to make sure that your ".md" file (which stores all of your Moneydance info, and should be somewhere on your computer) is in your Dropbox folder somewhere. I manually moved it from my Documents folder, into a Moneydance folder in my Dropbox that I created just for this purpose. THEN you install the app, and it will look for (and find) the ".md" file in your Dropbox to begin syncing.

It took a little effort, but I can confirm that it does work, if you can get it all set up correctly.

And to the people at Moneydance: THANK YOU for finally adding Dropbox sync!

Maybe I'm not doing something obvious as I'm a bit new to dropbox.
I've done the network sync in money dance on macbook pro, and set up the encryption password. I've saved the main money dance file into a new folder in the dropbox folder on macbook.

I've updated the money dance in iPhone. Disconnected my wifi sync so that I can select drop box. I've logged into drop box through money dance but it can't find any files configured to sync.

Help!

Hi Daniel, yes apparently wordpress published this blog post before the app was approved. You should be able to install the app and get syncing now!

I have followed the instructions on my computer to get the Network Sync updated and enabled, but I can't get the new version of MoneyDance (1.5) on my iPod Touch. Also, the KB link above redirects to a login page, even after I have created an account and logged in. Was this announcement posted too early, or have things gone wrong since it was posted?

Hi James,
You're right that the iOS app update was long overdue and should've been done months after the initial release, not years. We have one update being reviewed by Apple now which is set to be approved on or about Monday. We have big plans for the iOS app but have learned our lesson about giving timelines. The desktop version of Moneydance is coming along nicely (especially since we've added a new full time developer in May) and will be made public when it is ready. Buying decisions should be made based on a current version of Moneydance that anyone can download and try for free.

I can't apologise for the putting some time and effort into a second product. A software product company with only one product is much less likely to be around in five years.

I know I've about had it with Moneydance. I'm certainly not planning on paying for a new version unless I see some important features. Budget features that used to work were accidentally removed in the last release, and current support for budgeting is almost non-existent. It's over 10 years behind Quicken in that area. And gee, I don't have any iOS devices. So excuse me if I'm part of the group that is less than excited.

I've got to say that I agree with James Sumners. It is all well and fine to work on a sync tool, but you miss the point. Your flagship product and your web site are named Moneydance. Put keeping it current with an active update program and further development ahead of or, at least, on par with a peripheral application for syncing. Decide what you are all about. Is it a finance application or online syncing? The glacial pace of updates/development of Moneydance would suggest that it is not your main focus. If you read and accept the comments from your own customers, I think that you will find that focusing on improving Moneydance would be preferable for many (if not most). In Moneydane you have a really good program. Do not let it fall to the side because attention has been diverted elsewhere. Do not talk of awesome new features for Moneydance. Instead, release them to the waiting customer base. No updates for the desktop application in nine months and no default account for the iOS app after twenty-four months speaks far louder than does the promise of awesome new features.

James, the iOS app update is currently in Apple’s review queue and is slated for release on Monday, June 18. We’ve been pushing hard to get it and SyncSpace out, and after a brief breather we’ll be turning our focus to the awesome new features we’re working on for Moneydance 2012.
